Carey was one of 30 Irish people invited to the United States in 2015 to attend Ireland Funds gatherings. One of those gatherings also included billionaire hoteliers June and Archie Bennett among the attendees. Carey was jailed for five-and-a-half years after defrauding multiple people of nearly €400,000 by falsely claiming he had cancer and required expensive treatment. The photographs were removed from the website after his conviction and sentencing.
