The 2026 federal budget is under debate in the Bundestag after Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil presented a draft that will be deliberated for around two months and voted on at the end of November. Tax revenues are insufficient to cover planned spending, forcing many ministries to work with significantly smaller budgets and prompting warnings of tough, demanding decisions. The government has created a 500 billion euro credit-financed special fund for infrastructure and climate protection to accelerate renovations. The transport ministry expects substantial benefits as around 25,000 kilometers of highways and roughly 5,000 bridges need urgent repair.
