The European Union and India finalized a landmark free trade agreement after nearly two decades of negotiations. The pact will create a market of roughly two billion people and account for nearly a quarter of global GDP, according to the European Commission. The agreement paves the way for freer trade in goods between the EU’s 27 member states and India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the deal will bring major opportunities for India’s 1.4 billion people and millions in Europe. Officials framed the timing as a hedge against rising global trade tensions. EU diplomat Kaja Kallas also aims to sign a security and defense partnership with India.
