Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council voted not to nominate anybody for the presidency, narrowing the number of councils that can put forward candidates. A call was made in Kerry County Council for councillors to ignore party whips and support an independent challenger to succeed President Michael D Higgins. Fourteen candidates attended a special nomination session of Kerry County Council and presented their credentials in person. The nomination process involved direct presentations by hopefuls and visible lobbying within local councils over whom to support for the presidential election.
