Hundreds of women face potentially longer journey for maternity care in patient safety move
Briefly

Portiuncula University Hospital is initiating an approach to improve patient safety, causing higher risk pregnant women to potentially require care further away. Each year, about 200 to 300 women may be affected by this change. The move stems from multiple reviews assessing the care complexities at the Ballinasloe hospital, and while it is currently specific to this facility, it may extend to other maternity units in the future if recommended.
The approach is currently confined to Portiuncula University Hospital, but other maternity units could follow suit if recommended.
Around 200 to 300 higher risk pregnant women will have to potentially travel further for care every year as part of a patient safety move in a Galway maternity unit.
The transfer of a wide group of women whose care may be more complex followed a number of reviews carried out at Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinasloe.
