Hundreds march in silence to honor victims of Swiss bar fire that left 40 dead
"They went there to party"
"Through this tragic event, I believe we must all remember that we are all brothers and sisters in humanity,"
"It's important to support each other, to hug each other, and to move forward towards light."
"For the young - but even for adults - it's hard to understand things that seem inexplicable,"
Hundreds of mourners gathered in Crans-Montana for a silent procession and Mass to honor 40 people killed and many severely injured in a New Year's Eve fire at Le Constellation bar. Participants filed from Chapelle Saint-Christophe to the bar, some applauding, others embracing, carrying flowers and leaving tributes at a makeshift memorial behind white screens. The dense procession passed shuttered stores as snow machines sent plumes across the mountaintop. Mourners stood weeping before a growing pile of bouquets, cuddly toys and messages, then broke into sustained applause while local residents urged support and mutual comfort. One mother said her daughter, celebrating her 17th birthday, called to report being stuck because the bar was cordoned off.
