"I visit Porto at least once every year, and never tire of wandering its pretty streets or marvelling at the azulejo-adorned architecture. Like many, I make a beeline for the majestic Dom Luis I bridge every time I arrive - stretching across the Douro river and an emblem of the city, it's my walking connection to Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto 's often overlooked neighbour."
"Home to countless Port wine lodges which stud its riverside, Vila Nova de Gaia is most famous for storing and maturing Portugal 's beloved fortified drink. Historically, barrels from the Douro Valley were brought in on elegant wooden boats called Rabelos (no longer in use but displayed for posterity along the river today), and Gaia was chosen for its slightly cooler climate to store the nectar."
Porto's Dom Luis I bridge provides a pedestrian link to Vila Nova de Gaia, a city long associated with the storage and maturation of Port wine. Gaia's riverside features numerous Port lodges and terracotta-fronted houses, and barrels from the Douro Valley were historically brought on wooden Rabelos for ageing in Gaia's slightly cooler climate. The area was traditionally a day-visit destination with The Yeatman as its standout hotel, but recent years have seen growth in hospitality and dining. The 2023 opening of The Rebello, a design-led hotel in a former factory, introduced panoramic Douro views, stylish suites and expanded space for visitors.
