Amity Neumeister made a spontaneous, last-minute trip from Rome to attend the Winter Olympics after seeing images of the Dolomites, Italy’s medal surge, and friends describing an energetic vibe in Milan. Neumeister bought figure skating tickets and recalled growing up in the US Pacific northwest. More than 1.27 million spectators had purchased tickets by the Games' midpoint, filling venues to an average of 85% capacity. The Milano Cortina Games spanned almost 8,500 square miles across Alpine venues including Bormio, Livigno, Anterselva and Val di Fiemme and concluded in Verona. The dispersed footprint produced complex logistical challenges and provided no single spectator hub.
