Hennadiy Trukhanov, Odesa's Embattled, Lightning-Rod Mayor, Denies Russian Citizenship Claims
"I assure all Ukrainians, everyone who sees and who wants to know the truth today, that I never had Russian citizenship,"
"I had no right to obtain this citizenship, because I did not apply to Russia for citizenship in order to obtain citizenship from it, and I could not obtain it in any other way at all."
"I don't know why they don't like me,"
"Maybe it's my haircut."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revoked Hennadiy Trukhanov's Ukrainian citizenship and imposed a military administration on Odesa, citing security concerns and SBU reports. The Security Service of Ukraine released a photograph it said was a Russian passport issued to Trukhanov in 2015. Trukhanov, mayor since 2014 and a former lawmaker, denied ever holding Russian citizenship and said he never applied for it. Odesa is Ukraine's largest Black Sea port, a key maritime export route and the navy headquarters, whose strategic and economic importance increased after Russia seized Crimea in 2014.
