Having 36 dancers waiting for me fills me with dread': choreographer Crystal Pite on her seminal productions
"This was my first time being invited to create a work for a big ballet company, says Pite. It felt like entering a different planet. There's something thrilling and chilling about seeing a large group of people aligned in their task. So when you see things in nature and in the world that are in sync, there's something in that which touches you deeply. And yet it can really have a malevolent quality. It feels beautiful and it feels dangerous."
Crystal Pite is a highly respected Canadian choreographer who founded Kidd Pivot in Vancouver in 2002 and creates works for major ballet companies including the Paris Opera Ballet and Royal Ballet. Her choreography is distinguished by its focus on human emotion and relationships, avoiding movement for its own sake. Pite addresses significant contemporary issues such as refugee crises, climate change, and political conflict through her work. She employs diverse approaches, ranging from intimate duets to large-scale pieces featuring massed dancers moving in unison. Her upcoming work Body & Soul (Part 1) combines elements from across her artistic practice and will be performed by English National Ballet at Sadler's Wells and Theatre Royal Plymouth in spring.
