Sweden's equality agency reports an increase in hate, threats, and harassment against female politicians, causing many to censor themselves or leave public life. Anna-Karin Hatt resigned as leader of the Center Party in October 2025 after receiving so much hate and threats that she no longer felt safe. Similar resignations occurred in Germany, including Tessa Ganserer and Yvonne Magwas, following smear campaigns and hostility. Studies across Europe show women in prominent roles are particularly vulnerable to hate speech. A survey by HateAid and the Technical University of Munich found almost a quarter of women in public positions received threats of sexual violence such as rape eight times more often than men.
