Greenland and Denmark formed a united front to oppose US President Donald Trump's proposal to buy Greenland. Greenland remains an autonomous territory after three centuries as a Danish colony. Main Greenland political parties all favor independence but disagree on timing and methods. Growing US pressure prompted most parties to suspend independence preparations and form a coalition government in March last year, leaving Naleraq in opposition advocating rapid independence. Trump pushed the takeover idea intensely before stepping back after outlining a framework deal on Arctic security with NATO's secretary-general. European support reduced Greenland's sense of claustrophobic dependence on Denmark.
