European governments should adopt a firmer stance toward the United States and pursue greater sovereignty and independence rather than respond with fear or intimidation. Reliance on uncertainty and fear by the U.S. president functions as a tactic to achieve strategic goals, but decisions made from fear tend to be wrong. Renewed U.S. interest in Greenland has prompted resistance from European governments. Europe possesses geostrategic and geoeconomic importance to Washington, and a diminished American presence could allow Russian influence to expand. A significant U.S. withdrawal from Europe could leave the United States strategically squeezed between Russia and China, damaging American and European interests.
