Mert Sayim is a refugee, migration, and integration advisor for Diakonie who regularly observes deportations at airports in North Rhine-Westphalia, especially Dusseldorf. More than 2,800 people were deported from Dusseldorf airport in 2024, and over 20,000 people were deported from Germany that year. Deportations rose from just under 13,000 in 2022 to over 20,000 in 2024, with 12,000 already deported in the first half of 2025. Sayim documents on-site treatment and misconduct of deportees. Diakonie recommends individual evaluations for sick deportees to ensure access to necessary medical care and calls for greater sensitivity and flexibility.
