EU Regulation 2023/2411 creates EU-wide geographical indication protection for craft and industrial products, effective 1 December 2025 with EUIPO opening applications. The protection targets iconic goods whose reputation or quality derives from a specific place, including examples like Bohemian glass, Limoges porcelain and Solingen knives. The definition covers items made entirely by hand, with manual or digital tools, or by machines when manual input remains important, and also standardized, serially produced goods. Eligibility requires origin in a defined area, a quality, reputation or characteristic essentially attributable to that origin, and at least one production step carried out in the area. The scheme is open to non-EU geographical indications and aims to help local producers safeguard authenticity and fight counterfeits.
