""Syriza is currently polling at just under 4% and would struggle to enter parliament if elections were held today,""
Alexis Tsipras, Greece's prime minister from 2015 to 2019 during the debt crisis, has resigned from Syriza and given up his parliamentary seat. He intends to form a new party and to reorganize the progressive opposition to make it more effective. Tsipras plans to speak directly to citizens and pursue a political restart under his leadership. In 2015 he and finance minister Yanis Varoufakis called a referendum against austerity and attempted to resist international creditors, ultimately failing. In 2018 Tsipras helped end a decades-long name dispute by renaming Macedonia the Republic of North Macedonia. Syriza currently polls below 4% and risks falling out of parliament.
