The pipeline, along with the earlier built Nord Stream 1, was meant to transport cheap Russian gas to Germany, but certification was halted by Scholz after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Both pipelines were then hit by explosions in September 2022 and currently lie damaged and unused, beneath the Baltic Sea."
"Nord Stream 2 was constructed during Scholz's tenure as finance minister and vice chancellor under Angela Merkel, amid stiff opposition from Ukraine, Poland and the US among others. Germany's dependence on Russian energy was brought into sharp focus and it became a foreign policy nightmare as the Moscow's invasion of Ukraine intensified. The inquiry is being conducted by the northern state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania in its capital of Schwerin."
