"North Korean soldiers fighting for Russia are still causing problems for Ukrainian forces more than a year after they were first deployed in support of Moscow's war. The North Korean soldiers who were deployed to Russia's Kursk region to thwart a Ukrainian incursion were initially tasked with brutal infantry assaults that resulted in high casualties. Their role has since shifted to drone reconnaissance and artillery operations."
"North Korea has sent millions of artillery shells and multiple rocket launcher ammunition to Russia during the war, along with the cannons and launchers that can fire these munitions. Pyongyang has also provided Moscow with at least 100 ballistic missiles and anti-tank weapons. The North Korean forces had no modern experience in major combat operations, so Russia trained them in drone, artillery, infantry, and trench-clearing operations."
North Korean soldiers remain deployed in Russia's Kursk region and have shifted roles from front-line infantry assaults to drone reconnaissance and artillery operations. Initial infantry assaults were brutal, caused high casualties, and often followed largely ineffective "human wave"-style approaches. North Korea has supplied Russia with millions of artillery shells, multiple rocket launcher ammunition, cannons, launchers, at least 100 ballistic missiles, and anti-tank weapons. In fall 2024 roughly 11,000 North Korean troops deployed to assist in recapturing territory after a Ukrainian incursion. Limited modern combat experience prompted Russian training in drone, artillery, infantry, and trench-clearing operations. Artillery shells pose the principal problem for Ukrainian forces in this sector.
