"The alarm was raised just after 9am, today, January 15 when the Coast Guard's Marine Rescue Co-Ordination Centre in Valentia received a call from Spanish counterparts in Madrid requesting their assistance for a Medivac for two injured fishermen. The men were on board the boat Novo Alborada which was approximately 30 miles southwest of Valentia. It is understood the men were injured when a rope snapped."
"Valentia Coastguard tasked two Coast Guard helicopters - Rescue 115 from Shannon and 118 from Sligo along with the Coast Guard fixed-wing plane. Valentia Coast Guard said conditions at sea were very challenging for the rescue operation with swells of up to 6 metres and the first attempt was unsuccessful. Rescue 115 had to refuel while Rescue 118 competed the operation."

Valentia Coastguard tasked two helicopters, Rescue 115 from Shannon and Rescue 118 from Sligo, and the Coast Guard fixed-wing plane. Conditions at sea were very challenging with swells up to six metres and the first rescue attempt failed. Rescue 115 refuelled while Rescue 118 completed the operation. One fisherman died and the other was taken to Cork University Hospital.
