Fire extinguished in Spain's Cordoba mosque-cathedral DW 08/09/2025
Briefly

A large fire in the historic mosque-turned-cathedral of Cordoba was successfully extinguished by firefighters who intervened rapidly to prevent a catastrophe. The blaze, which may have been caused by a malfunctioning electric sweeper, broke out around 9 p.m. local time in the chapel area. Fire teams managed to contain and extinguish the fire swiftly, later cooling the structure to prevent re-ignition. This building, originally a mosque, has a rich history as a significant architectural site since it was converted into a cathedral after Christian reconquest in the 13th century. The event recalled the Notre Dame fire in 2019.
Firefighters have extinguished a massive blaze that was burning in the historic mosque-turned-cathedral in the southern Spanish city of Cordoba.
The rapid and magnificent intervention of firefighters averted a catastrophe, according to Cordoba Mayor Jose Mara Bellido.
The blaze broke out around 9 p.m. local time in one of the chapels in the Almanzor naves, possibly caused by a short circuit in an electric sweeper.
Now a cathedral, the building was originally a mosque between the 8th and 10th centuries and is considered a jewel of Islamic architecture.
