Fionnan Sheahan: Education Minister fails to master the art of using weasel words to blame an anonymous quango
"SNA allocations fiasco has put the spotlight on Hildegarde Naughton once again The Government got an awful shock last week. Ministers suddenly discovered their policies were being taken seriously. There they were thinking their job was just to go around announcing hypothetical proposals and then letting them drift away in the hope the public would forget about the issue in time."
"The Health Minister found out it was official policy for the past decade to move the Rotunda Hospital out to Blanchardstown to locate it with Connolly Hospital. Of course, nothing has happened to advance the plan in the intervening 10 years. The planning appeals board, An Coimisiún Pleanála, rejected plans for a €100m extension of the Rotunda Hospital to care for critically ill women and infants. Among the reasons for turning down the vitally needed four-storey building was the policy to move the entire hospital."
An SNA allocations fiasco has again focused attention on Hildegarde Naughton. Government ministers were surprised when long-standing policies were treated as operative rather than hypothetical. The Health Minister learned of an official decade-old policy to relocate the Rotunda Hospital to Blanchardstown alongside Connolly Hospital. No substantive progress occurred during the intervening ten years. An Coimisiún Pleanála rejected proposals for a €100m, four-storey Rotunda extension intended to care for critically ill women and infants. The relocation policy was cited as a reason for refusal, exposing contradictions between policy statements and project approvals.
