Farewell To Helmut Marko, Ignorant Loudmouth | Defector
"For very casual fans, the role of "motorsport advisor" can be a bit impenetrable, and belies the high-ranking nature of Marko's appointment. He was employed not by Red Bull Racing, but reported directly to Red Bull, the energy drink company, and was a close friend of late Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz."
"We know that he has problems in qualifying, he has fluctuations in form, he is South American and he is just not as completely focused in his head as Max [Verstappen] is or as Sebastian [Vettel]."
"It wasn't meant that way. I meant that a Mexican has a different mentality than a German or a Dutchman. But who knows, maybe it's controlled."
Helmut Marko stepped down as Red Bull motorsport advisor after two decades in the role. He reported directly to Red Bull the company and had been a close friend of late owner Dietrich Mateschitz. Several senior Red Bull figures left recently, including Adrian Newey to Aston Martin and Jonathan Wheatley to Sauber, while Christian Horner was removed as team principal. Marko featured in public power struggles within the organisation and made controversial remarks about drivers, including racially charged comments about Sergio Pérez and a contentious comment about Yuki Tsunoda. The motorsport-advisor role remained high-ranking but often opaque to casual fans.
