Lausanne saw violent riots after a 17-year-old resident died early Sunday after hitting a wall while fleeing police on a reportedly stolen scooter. Emergency services attempted resuscitation but the youth died; it was the third death during a police intervention in under three months and the seventh in Lausanne and the Vaud region since 2016. On Sunday about 100 people wearing balaclavas set fires and damaged a bus; the next night 150–200 people set roadblocks and burned trash containers. Police used 54 tear gas grenades and made seven arrests. Four officers were suspended after racist, sexist and discriminatory messages surfaced in private WhatsApp groups. Authorities sought to head off further violence.

"Pyrotechnic devices were used against the police; it's scandalous," Lausanne city's security councillor Pierre-Antoine Hildbrand told the Keystone-ATS news agency.
"We are facing a movement that has nothing to do with the death of this youth, but which is using it as an excuse to attack law enforcement. It's disgraceful."
