'Everyone is so sad' - Mayo beekeeper who died after being stung had celebrated daughter's wedding last weekend
""She was a lovely woman and they are a lovely family. Everyone is so sad and upset. "Kathleen and Des would be well known and do very well at honey shows across the country. "The Phoenix Park honey show is on this weekend, and they would always do quite well at that, so it is so sad this has happened."
""The Phoenix Park honey show is on this weekend, and they would always do quite well at that, so it is so sad this has happened. "My understanding is Des and Kathleen were helping someone else manage their hive, which would be very typical of them. "People came and were trying to help, but they were getting stung. They were trying to get a defibrillator. Everyone did their absolute best. It's terrible sad."
Kathleen Devine, in her 70s and from Knockmore near Ballina, died after a suspected allergic reaction to bee stings at a farm near Ballycastle. She and her husband Des had been helping a friend manage a hive while harvesting honey; she wore a protective suit but one or two bees entered and stung her. Emergency services and rescue helicopter R118 attended; paramedics stabilised her before transfer to Sligo University Hospital, where she later died. A woman in her 40s was also stung and treated at Mayo University Hospital. The Devines were active beekeepers known for success at honey shows, and neighbours rushed to help.
