Eurovision's first trans winner Dana International slams boycott of 2026 contest
""with warmth and love as she sang "a message of equality, acceptance, human dignity, and the basic rights of every person"""
""Beyond that, we've been part of the Eurovision Song Contest for many years. We try our best in the competition, and sometimes we even succeed,""
""So, explain to me how and why you have turned against us and announced your withdrawal? You no longer want us singing with you? Do you understand how violent and insulting that decision is? How much it adds only hatred and harm?""
Several national broadcasters — Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain and Slovenia — confirmed they will not compete in Eurovision 2026, with Iceland due to decide. The broadcaster vote followed new European Broadcasting Union rules that effectively allow Israel to participate next year. Israel's continued inclusion has been contentious because of the country's military action in Gaza. Dana International, the first publicly transgender Eurovision winner, criticized the boycotts as violent and insulting and said the withdrawals foster hatred and harm. She noted longstanding participation in the contest and widespread welcome during past performances in those countries.
