Eurovision 2024 Winner to Return Trophy Due to Israel's Participation
"Swiss singer Nemo announced their plan and reasoning for the decision in an Instagram post. "Even though I'm immensely grateful for the community around this contest and everything this experience has taught me both as a person and artist, today I no longer feel this trophy belongs on my shelf," they wrote."
""Eurovision says it stands for unity, inclusion, and dignity for all. Those values made this contest meaningful to me," their statement continues. "But Israel's continued participation, during what the UN's Independent International Commission of Inquiry has concluded to be a genocide, shows a clear conflict between those ideals and the decisions made by the EBU.""
"Nemo, who won with their song "The Code," became the first openly non-binary musician to win Eurovision. Their announcement comes amid a wider boycott of Eurovision due to Israel's participation. Iceland recently joined Ireland, Spain, Slovenia, and the Netherlands in announcing that it will not be a part of next year's competition, amid calls for Israel to be excluded over its military action in Gaza."
Nemo, the Swiss singer who won the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, announced plans to return the trophy after Israel was allowed to participate in next year’s competition. Nemo cited Eurovision’s stated values of unity, inclusion and dignity and said Israel’s continued participation, amid what the UN's Independent International Commission of Inquiry concluded to be a genocide, conflicts with those values. Nemo won with the song "The Code" and became the first openly non-binary Eurovision winner. Several countries including Iceland, Ireland, Spain, Slovenia and the Netherlands have announced they will not participate next year as part of a boycott.
