A dispute has emerged in Europe over allocation of the upper 6 GHz wireless band (6425–7125 MHz) between license-exempt Wi‑Fi and licensed mobile networks. Newer Wi‑Fi standards like Wi‑Fi 6E and Wi‑Fi 7 can use the full 6 GHz range to deliver higher performance, while mobile operators seek the band for 5G and future 6G services. The Radio Spectrum Policy Group is evaluating sharing options for the upper band; the lower portion is already license-exempt and Ofcom has followed a similar approach. Reports that Germany may prefer exclusive mobile use have prompted industry warnings about potential harm to consumer connectivity and digital development.
