France and Germany jointly signaled a push for stronger European technological independence at a Berlin summit on European digital sovereignty. Europe trails the United States and China in artificial intelligence, semiconductor production, and cloud computing, contributing to weak economic growth prospects. The summit emphasized risks from reliance on critical infrastructure from China and the US, notably telecom equipment from Huawei and ZTE used across European networks. European institutions are increasingly exploring measures to phase out such suppliers. The shift follows a long period of viewing China mainly in commercial terms and accepts that sovereignty has costs to avoid greater dependence risks.
