The EU pledged to stand firm after fining American tech companies for breaching recently introduced digital laws. The Digital Markets Act (DMA) regulates digital platforms and the Digital Services Act (DSA) targets illegal content and transparency. Since President Donald Trump's return in 2025, US criticism of EU tech regulation has intensified, with the US Trade Representative accusing the EU of discriminatory policies that deter US tech competitiveness and warning of responsive measures. EU competition chief Teresa Ribera said regulators would not undo rules because of US objections. The DMA fined Meta and Apple, and the DSA has been used against X over ad transparency, researcher data access, and verification changes.
