"At the time, the then prime minister Boris Johnson described leaving the scheme as a "tough decision", arguing that participation had become "extremely expensive"."
""It's fantastic that another generation of students will be able to be part of the Erasmus programme," he said."
""Students have been campaigning to rejoin Erasmus from the day we left. This is a huge win for the student movement.""
The UK is set to rejoin the Erasmus programme, with students expected to take part in placements from January 2027. Ministers are due to confirm the move while the government declines to comment on ongoing negotiations with the EU. The decision reverses the UK withdrawal from Erasmus in December 2020, when participation was deemed costly and replaced by the domestic Turing scheme in 2021. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has signalled interest in resetting relations and pursuing youth mobility arrangements. Student groups campaigned for a return, and Erasmus funding previously supported tens of thousands of UK participants, covering study, training and volunteering for up to a year.
