Emergency motion submitted to Dublin City Council for regulation of high-speed e-scooters and scramblers
"Every week we see high-powered e-scooters and e-mopeds racing along footpaths and cycle lanes, completely ignoring safety rules. One wrong move can be fatal. This is not just a nuisance, it is a ticking time bomb for public safety, and the Government and all relevant stakeholders must act immediately. If they fail to regulate and enforce against these vehicles, Dublin City Council will have no choice but to step in to protect our citizens before more lives are destroyed,"
"fully commence, implement, and enforce the provisions of the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023"
"to ensure that high-powered e-scooters and Surron-type models are subject to licensing, registration, and insurance requirements in line with other motorised vehicles"
A four-year-old girl suffered serious injuries after being struck by a Surron e-scrambler in Tyrellstown and was admitted to Temple Street Hospital. A man in his 20s fled the scene following the collision. Councillor Danny Byrne warned that high-powered e-scooters and e-mopeds regularly use footpaths and cycle lanes, creating a severe public safety risk. A City Council motion requests the Minister for Transport to fully commence and enforce the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023 and to subject high-powered e-scooters and Surron-type models to licensing, registration, and insurance. The motion also seeks an immediate enforcement blitz, bye-laws prohibiting use on footpaths and pedestrian zones, and monthly reporting from An Garda Síochána and Dublin Fire Brigade to Dublin City Council.
