A 79-year-old woman from Massapequa was scammed out of over $250,000. Initiated by a fake email from PayPal, she contacted customer service and was deceived into downloading an app. Believing she had received a mistakenly sent $50,000, she was instructed to purchase and return gold coins. Over the course of weeks, she sent increasingly larger amounts of money to the scammer disguised as money for gold coins. After realizing she was being scammed, she contacted police, leading to the arrest of Siarhei Radyna, 49, for grand larceny.
The woman received an email falsely claiming to be from PayPal, indicating a charge of $364, prompting her to communicate with an unknown individual.
Following steps given by the scammer, the woman downloaded an app and was tricked into believing she needed to return mistakenly sent funds.
Ultimately, the woman sent a total of over $250,000 in gold coins to the scammer before realizing she was being defrauded and contacting authorities.
Siarhei Radyna, 49, was arrested in connection with the scam after a thorough investigation by police.
