Asif Iqbal, 31, a Pakistani doctor, was on his way to work at University Hospital Limerick on Sunday morning at around 10am when a man set upon him in a racially motivated attack. The attacker assaulted Iqbal and told him to "go back home." After the assault, the attacker began sobbing when he realised his victim was a medic. Iqbal then comforted the man who had attacked him. The incident combined racial abuse and violence with an unexpected moment of remorse when the attacker recognised the doctor's profession.
