Denmark's 'jewellery law' raises minimal revenue in decade since inception
"More recently, figures given by the Ministry of Immigration to parliament's immigration committee in August this year show that the Danish Immigration Service (Udlndingestyrelsen) concluded 194 cases using the law in the nine-and-a-half year period between January 2016 and June 2025. That resulted in valuables being confiscated in 29 instances, giving the government a total revenue of 383,651 kroner (around 45,300) to reinvest on asylum costs."
"Denmark's 'jewellery law', introduced in 2016 to allow authorities to seize valuables from asylum seekers to help fund their protection, is reportedly providing inspiration for a strict new approach by the UK government. How beneficial has the law been for Denmark? The UK government on Monday unveiled dramatic changes to its asylum system, including drastically cutting protections for refugees and their children, in a series of steps it says are inspired by Danish policymaking."
"Police figures published in 2022 showed that there were between 0 to 5 jewellery law cases a year between the law's inception and May 30th of that year. It was not used at all in 2019 and in 2021 it was used five times, involving nationals of Iran, Eritrea, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. It was not clear what was taken in each case; whether the item was jewellery or what the value was."
The 2016 Danish jewellery law permits police to confiscate cash and valuables over 10,000 kroner from arriving migrants and asylum seekers. Ministry guidelines advise against taking wedding or engagement rings and allow officers to assess sentimental value of other items. Early figures showed between 0 and 5 yearly cases up to May 2022, with no use in 2019 and five uses in 2021 involving several nationalities. Updated ministry figures report 194 cases concluded from January 2016 to June 2025, with confiscations in 29 instances yielding 383,651 kroner to reinvest in asylum costs.
