Denmark urges Trump to cease threats to take over Greenland DW 01/05/2026
"We do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defense."
"from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it."
"It makes absolutely no sense to talk about the US needing to take over Greenland. The US has no right to annex any of the three countries in the Danish Kingdom."
"When the President of the United States says that 'we need Greenland' and links us to Venezuela and military intervention, it's not just wrong. It's disrespectful."
Denmark and Greenland rejected US President Donald Trump's repeated suggestions that the United States needs to control Greenland for national security. Trump stated, "We do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defense," and later said the US needs Greenland "from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it." Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called annexation nonsensical and asserted the US has no right to annex any part of the Danish Kingdom. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen called linking Greenland to Venezuela and military intervention wrong and disrespectful. The Danish Kingdom comprises Denmark proper, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland; the latter two enjoy significant autonomy.
