"It is fair to say that the situation in Greenland and the time difference between Denmark and the United States was quite an important factor introducing this arrangement during the spring, said the source."
"The people of Greenland would love to become a state of the United States of America, the president said during a news conference in January. We were greeted with tremendous love and affection and respect. The people would like to be a part of the United States."
Danish foreign ministry operates a dedicated night watch that monitors President Donald Trump’s out-of-hours mentions of Greenland. A team works in shifts beginning at 5 p.m., and any mention of the word Greenland by Trump triggers a report circulated to relevant government departments at 7 a.m. the following morning. The watch originated after Trump’s repeated statements expressing a desire to acquire Greenland and his refusal to rule out military options, despite strong opposition from Greenlandic and Danish officials. Polling found 85 percent of Greenland residents opposed joining the United States, with only 6 percent in favor and 9 percent undecided.
