Czechia: Feud between president and government intensifies
"If I have Turek at the Environment Ministry, he [President Pavel] can have peace of mind. If not, I will burn our bridges in a way that will enter the textbooks of political science as an extreme case of cohabitation."
"I have the prime minister's support on this matter, not to mention the stance of the SPD."
"Macinka wrote in his message to the president's advisor that he is willing to fight the president 'with no scruples' unless his fellow party member, Filip Turek, is appointed environment minister."
President Petr Pavel, former head of the Czech armed forces and ex-chairman of the NATO Military Committee, usually speaks in a measured, steady tone. He convened an unscheduled briefing at Prague Castle where his voice shook as he accused Foreign Minister Petr Macinka of blackmail. Macinka, leader of the euroskeptic Motorists for Themselves and a member of Prime Minister Andrej Babis's coalition, sent late-night SMS messages to Petr Kolar, the president's chief advisor. The messages threatened the president unless Filip Turek was appointed environment minister and claimed backing from the prime minister and the far-right SPD. Pavel published the messages in full.
