"The proposal would erase the distinctive and rich contribution to Irish life of the Jewish communities over many decades, including actual participation in the Irish War of Independence and the emerging State,"
"an insult to Jewish people, to Palestinians, and to the basic principles of historical truth."
"blurring lines"
"a cesspool of antisemitism"
Taoiseach Micheál Martin and other government figures have called on Dublin City Council to halt a proposal to rename Herzog Park in Rathgar. The park commemorates Chaim Herzog, who was born in Belfast, raised in Dublin, and served as president of Israel from 1983 to 1993. Sinn Féin councillor Kourtney Kenny tabled a motion in June 2024 to rename the park Hind Rajab Park to honour a six-year-old Palestinian killed in Gaza. The South East Area Committee passed the motion last December with one objection. A Dublin City Council meeting is scheduled for December 1 to debate the proposal and a consultation on a new name. Public reactions include criticism from Herzog’s son, US Senator Lindsey Graham, and comments from People-Before-Profit councillor Conor Reddy.
