Research on six cockatoos from three species demonstrated varied dancing behaviors when exposed to music. Out of 21 known cockatoo species, dancing behavior was observed in 10. Common movements included downward movements and sidesteps, while wing movements were rare. Sulphur-crested cockatoos displayed unique dance moves not seen in other species. The study ruled out stereotypic behavior, indicating that the cockatoos’ dance was voluntary with significant variation. Previous studies suggest that dancing may relate to courtship displays or human interaction, although this study challenges the idea that owners influence this behavior.
The study revealed that 10 of the 21 known cockatoo species displayed dancing behavior, with certain movements unique to the sulphur-crested cockatoos.
Cockatoos in the study showed considerable variation in their dance movements, ruling out stereotypic behavior common in parrots.
