"Asked about progress at the site on Wednesday, Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill said BAM was only drawing down less than a third of the funding that was available to it and the level of contractors on site was almost half that of activity seen at the end of 2024. However, the contractor said it was in a specialist stage of the project and it was "entirely normal" for fewer personnel to be on site."
"Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Ms Carroll MacNeill said: "The single biggest concern I have at the moment is with BAM, is with the fact that there are half the number of contractors on site than there had been at the end of last year." She said there were previously 800-900 on site every week at the end of 2024 compared with around 400-500 now. The minister added that, based on the most recent information she had, BAM was not drawing down the full amount available to it to carry out work and bring in sub-contractors."
Dublin's new national children's hospital has repeatedly missed deadlines and now faces further uncertainty about completion. Original completion was August 2022; current projected cost has risen from €650 million to about €2.2 billion. Main contractor BAM reports completion will be followed by a six to nine month commissioning period. Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill reported that BAM is drawing down less than a third of available monthly funds and that onsite contractor numbers have fallen from about 800–900 weekly to roughly 400–500. BAM says the project is in a specialist stage, fewer personnel are normal, and most ongoing work involves design changes issued after a government promise of no further substantive alterations.
