Central Europe's populists left reeling by Venezuela attack DW 01/10/2026
"For years, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has tirelessly praised Donald Trump as a "man of peace." He sang the president's praises for brokering the ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians. Orban also repeated the US president's claims that if Trump had been in power in 2022, Russia would never have started its war against Ukraine. This is all part of Orban's "peace rhetoric" a cornerstone of the Hungarian prime minister's current election campaign."
"In the evening, two terse sentences appeared on the prime minister's Facebook page: There were "no Hungarian casualties or injuries" following the military action in Venezuela, while contact had been made with the Hungarian embassies in the region to ensure that no Hungarians were in danger. It was not until two days later, at his regular press conference at the beginning of the year, that Viktor Orban found a way to explain Trump's attack on Venezuela."
Viktor Orban repeatedly praised Donald Trump as a "man of peace," citing ceasefire brokering and claims that Trump would have prevented Russia's 2022 war on Ukraine as part of his election "peace rhetoric." When Trump ordered a military operation in Venezuela on January 3 and Maduro was captured, Orban's channels were silent for hours. His Facebook update only noted "no Hungarian casualties or injuries" and embassy contact. Two days later Orban called the action "eliminating a narco-state" and "good news" for Hungary, later posting anti-drug raid footage. Many Central and Southeastern European allies were caught off guard.
