"The people have spoken and have given their president a powerful mandate to articulate their vision for a new republic, a republic worthy of its name where everyone is valued and diversity is cherished, where sustainable solutions are urgently implemented, and where a home is a fundamental human right."
"all voices are represented, heard and valued"
"humbly and proudly as the 10th president of this beautiful country"
Ms Connolly was inaugurated in St Patrick's Hall at Dublin Castle and repeated the Declaration of Office in Irish before signing the oath and being officially declared president. A 21-gun salute was fired as she received the Seal of Office. Dignitaries attended the ceremony. The Galway politician, a former psychologist, barrister and mayor, pledged to build on predecessors' work and to ensure all voices are represented, heard and valued. She referenced Ireland's lived understanding of war, hunger and dispossession and said the country could not close its eyes to people forced to leave by war, famine or climate change. She criticised service shortfalls and neglect of the Irish language.
