Can Santa Claus survive in a melting world? DW 12/19/2025
"All of a sudden, they stood out in another way,"
"There are so many Christmas decorations that have an element of snow in it."
"The older generations, they have much more detailed stories of living with snow snow forts, sledges, [skiing] to school,"
"they miss snow,"
Erika Lundell moved from Stockholm to Malmo and immediately noticed pervasive snow imagery in Christmas decorations, from white fleece and icicle lights to bundled nativity figures. Decorative snow appears globally despite geographic mismatch; nativity scenes often portray snow even though Bethlehem rarely experiences it. In Sweden, a snowy Nordic winter remains part of national identity. Lundell studies cultural aspects of snow and interviewed mainly southern Swedes, where snowfall has declined over recent decades. Older generations recall detailed experiences—snow forts, sledges, skiing to school—while younger people more often encounter dirty, icy slush and commonly report missing classic snowy winters.
