British Army rolls out 86M AI-ready battlefield gear
"the AI-capable equipment includes radios, headsets, display tablets, cables, batteries, pouches, and antennas."
"precise information on surroundings and intelligence, meaning increased clarity on who are enemies and who are comrades."
"harnesses artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative communication technologies, allowing battlefield decisions that once took hours to now be made in minutes."
"Today, the UK possesses a similar Recce-Strike system to the one used by Ukraine to maul Russian forces in the Donbas. That system now sits at the heart of our Forward Land Forces in Estonia."
The £86 million contract funds the Dismounted Data System (DDS), supplying AI-capable radios, headsets, display tablets, cables, batteries, pouches and antennas. The kit delivers voice and visual data to provide precise information on surroundings and intelligence, improving clarity between enemies and comrades and maximizing battlefield effectiveness. Trials in Estonia under Project ASGARD tested a visual information element that reduced distraction from loud battlefield noises. The DDS harnesses AI and communications technologies to compress decisions that once took hours into minutes. ASGARD integrates weapon systems, surveillance equipment, automated technology, digital connections and data analysis to speed target decisions.
