Mark McCourt, aged 34 and from Edenreive, Newry, Co Down, led a gun-running ring that smuggled arms from the United States into Ireland. He was arrested during a garda raid while allegedly operating the smuggling operation and was described as being caught "red-handed." McCourt pleaded guilty in July to participating in a criminal organisation that attempted to import restricted weapons between February 2023 and July 2024, and to possession of firearms. The Special Criminal Court sentenced him to 12 years' imprisonment for his role in the illegal arms importation and possession.
