At least 17 migrants and asylum seekers were found dead in a partially deflated boat about 26 nautical miles southwest of Crete. Two survivors were rescued and hospitalized in critical condition. The vessel was spotted by a Turkish cargo ship and responders included Greek coastguard vessels and Frontex assets, including a boat, an aircraft and a Super Puma helicopter. Survivors reported instability from bad weather, lack of shelter, food and water, and the boat was taking on water. The boat’s sides were deflated, compressing passengers into reduced space. Coroners will carry out autopsies and consider dehydration as a possible cause. UNHCR reports over 16,770 asylum arrivals to Crete this year.
