Billy Kelleher: Fianna Fail has an urgent obligation to run a candidate for presidency
Briefly

A next scheduled parliamentary party meeting is in three weeks' time, which is too far away for urgent decisions. Just over 28 years ago, a newly elected TD participated in Fianna Fáil's internal parliamentary party process to select the 1997 presidential candidate. The selection required choosing between former leader and taoiseach Albert Reynolds and a relatively unknown yet highly experienced legal professor, Mary McAleese. The choice carried significant implications for the party's leadership and public image. Delays in convening the parliamentary party can hinder effective responses to emerging political challenges and pivotal decisions.

Just over 28 years ago, in one of my first acts as a new TD, I took part in the internal Fianna Fáil parliamentary party process to select our candidate for the 1997 presidential election.
It was in many respects a pivotal decision: choosing between our former leader and taoiseach, Albert Reynolds, and a relatively unknown yet highly experienced legal professor, Mary McAleese.
