Amazon has scrapped plans for a manufacturing plant in Ballycoolin, northwest Dublin, which would have created over 500 jobs. The site was intended for producing server racks for Amazon Web Services (AWS). Planning permission was granted in 2022 with state support. The halt was caused by ESB Networks' inability to supply power within the required timeframe due to existing network constraints. AWS expressed disappointment but hopes for future investments in Ireland. Currently, Amazon employs around 6,500 people in Ireland and has invested €22 billion in the country.
The decision to scrap the plant means more than 500 jobs will now not be created at the proposed facility.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) planned to use the new site for the manufacturing of server racks, a form of storage used in data centres.
AWS was disappointed that it did not prove possible to proceed with this project. If conditions allow, we do hope to be able to make other high-tech investments elsewhere in Ireland.
Amazon has made significant investments in Ireland totalling €22bn, and employs around 6,500 people across a number of locations.
