Freya Tobin, a student who recently completed sixth class at Scoil Mhuire National School, drowned in the River Suir while with friends. Emergency services arrived promptly, and she was airlifted to Cork University Hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. A critical incident management plan has been implemented at her school to support the community. A prayer service is scheduled in her memory, and local events have been canceled in response to the tragedy. Fr. Michael Toomey expressed condolences and gratitude for the emergency responders' efforts.
"Sometimes no words seem adequate when a tragedy like what happened in our parish in Newcastle today occurs. My thoughts and prayers are with the family tonight who have suffered a terrible loss in this awful tragedy."
"No words can give comfort at this time. Speaking with them this evening I know they are so grateful to all of the emergency services and to everyone who helped them in any way."
"Our local school, Scoil Mhuire Newcastle has already been in touch to help the entire school community and to be there for everyone at this time. Support will be offered in the school tomorrow and in the coming days."
"A prayer service is set to be held at Our Lady of the Assumption church in Newcastle for Freya's friends, family and the wider community."
