'A disgusting act' - Gardai investigating beheaded stag found by staff in Dublin parklands
"At this time of year the park closes at 5pm and all gates are locked. We have security in the house, it is well secured, but like I said it is a 270-acre park - it's difficult to cover all eventualities. It's definitely worrying."
"I went down there early this morning and they're over in one corner of the enclosure where normally they'd be out front and coming over for feeding times. They're a big hit with the public coming in through the Donabate village gate. But this morning, you can see they definitely know that something has happened."
"We believe this was premeditated and we are appealing to anyone who noticed anything in the area to contact Gardaí or the NPWS,"
A mature stag from the Irish red deer herd at Newbridge Demesne in Donabate was found killed in the early hours of Thursday, November 27. The herd consists of 16 deer and staff discovered the stag while heading to feed them. Gardaí and the National Parks and Wildlife Service are investigating and treating the case as a reported incident of wildlife crime. Newbridge House staff reported shock and devastation and noted the 270-acre park is locked at 5pm and has security but is difficult to cover fully. Fingal County Council described the killing as premeditated and appealed for witnesses. Red deer are Ireland's largest native land mammal and mature stags' antlers are often taken as trophies.
